Since the 1970s, home sizes in the US have increased while the average number of people living in them has decreased. This paradox of more space for fewer people started when building and buying bigger homes became the norm. Since then, median home sizes have grown, peaking in 2015 at 2.4k square feet. Despite today’s buyers wanting smaller homes, only 9% of the single-family homes built in 2024 were considered “entry-level” (1.4k square feet or less). Why do we keep building big houses?
