Once seen as a fading player in the wearables market, Garmin has managed to turn things around—even though its share of the overall smartwatch market remains very small.
We start by looking at Garmin’s early days, when it launched its innovative marine navigation device using GPS technology developed by the Department of Defense. The company then found major success with car GPS devices, but faced a steep challenge when smartphones integrated GPS capabilities.
Instead of trying to compete in the broad smartwatch market, Garmin chose to focus on specific niches, particularly in fitness tracking, outdoor activities, and marine applications. This shift allowed the company to tap into growing segments like the fitness market, where dedicated users value precision and durability over general smartwatch features.
