The US Forest Service has authorized a land exchange with a group of private landowners in the east Crazy Mountains of southern Montana. According to New York Magazine, the bulk of the exchange’s transaction costs were covered by the Yellowstone Club, a private club that owns and operates a ski resort in Big Sky, Montana, for members like Melinda French Gates and Tom Brady. The exchange aims to resolve public access issues on the eastern side of the mountain range, but some are skeptical of the Club’s involvement given the deal’s outcomes that give the Forest Service more land but at higher, possibly less-accessible elevation points.
