Some of the most popular cars in the US are known by a different name in other countries. Car companies spend billions of dollars on marketing, and the name is a crucial step in their branding strategy. In a paper titled, “Variation in Automobile Naming,” Ingrid Piller analyzed more than a thousand car names to understand the psychology behind them. She concludes that while every name aims to evoke a feeling, they do so in four different ways. It is due to the use of metaphors or association that disparities between countries occur, as these linguistic resources don’t necessarily translate in other countries, even English-speaking ones.
