Publix is one of the largest grocery chains in the country with over 1,400 locations and $60 billion in revenue, and it all started with one idea. In 1930, George W. Jenkins was a supermarket manager in Florida. Frustrated from the lack of attention from upper management, he decided to start his own supermarket with a culture that would contrast the neglect he had experienced. Part of that philosophy translated into his desire for all employees to own a part of the company. The company has grown so much that in 2016, an employee that had started working after graduating high school, took an early retirement and sold off more than $1m dollars of his stock. Today, around 80% of the company is owned by thousands of its current and past employees.
