Shutdowns are usually resolved by Congress by passing “continuing resolutions,” which opens up some short-term funding while they try to figure out their long-term solutions. If Congress can’t agree on and pass an annual spending bill to fund operations for the federal government, there will be a shutdown that temporarily puts a pause on a long list of functions. And agreeing isn’t this Congress’ specialty, so… What does that pause look like? Approx 3.5m other federal employees wouldn’t get paid, including around 50K airport security officers and 13K air traffic controllers, so expect some slow travel if you’re flying.
