An unlikely benefactor helped the US seal one of its biggest business deals, the Louisiana Purchase. After the American Revolution, the British retained access to the Mississippi River, posing a problem for the young United States, which only controlled land east of the river. France, under Napoleon, also faced difficulties with maintaining North American territories, given British threats and past losses. Seeking to secure New Orleans, France inadvertently opened negotiations with the US, resulting in the Louisiana Purchase deal. Lacking funds, the US secured financing through Barings Bank, a British institution, ultimately acquiring the land of 15 modern states.
